Thomas Kuriakose, MD

Thomas Kuriakose, MD, is a physician based in New York, NY, specializing in pediatric critical care. He is pursuing a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. In 2022, he completed his pediatric residency through the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center. His career has been consistently guided by a commitment to improving outcomes for underserved and marginalized pediatric populations. Thomas earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Economics from a college in Massachusetts. After graduation, he joined a teaching program in Mississippi, where he taught high school-level Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, Statistics, and SATP Biology for three years. His students routinely achieved above-average scores in state assessments. In addition to teaching, he served as an assistant coach for track and field and soccer, helping guide athletes to state-level success. These early experiences in education and mentorship played a significant role in shaping his interest in medicine. Thomas later received a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction before beginning medical school in New Jersey. While in medical school, he co-founded a mentorship program for adolescents living with HIV and served in multiple leadership positions at a student-run free clinic, including clinic director. He also contributed to a team-based healthcare training initiative to improve communication and safety within medical teams. His work was recognized with a distinction in service to the community. As a resident, he actively participated in curriculum development and health equity-focused projects. During his fellowship, his research centered on improving communication between providers and families in the pediatric intensive care unit, especially regarding acute respiratory failure. He also led the implementation of Health Equity Rounds to encourage discussion and action around systemic disparities in healthcare. Thomas Kuriakose, MD, continues to apply his combined experience in education, clinical practice, and advocacy to support critically ill children and promote equitable care in pediatric medicine.
