Eleven-year-old Jake wants a dog, but his "troddler" sister, Minna, wants a kitten. Worse yet, the only kitten name Minna can say is a total embarrassment. Jake still struggles with the loss of Patsy Williams, his next door neighbor, and worries about her husband. He just can't make any points with the grouchy old neighbor lady across the alley, and his parents keep expecting him to take on more household responsibilities. American children will never again experience the innocence and freedoms of Midwest farm life to be had in the 1950’s and 60’s. It was a hard-fought, yet simpler life; perhaps not so easily understood by today’s standards. It is my hope that I have provided a glimpse into that way of life, with Iowa Ways: A Rural 1960’s Coming of Age, and that through my first-person experiences, I can allow readers to either relive or encounter that treasured time with a taste of the issues that shaped the small family farm history for that era in Iowa and other Midwestern states. Iowaysis an eclectic collection of forty short narratives, beginning with “Biting Sow,” which depicts the dangers of raising hogs, and ending with “Water Haulin’,” which describes the challenges of carrying water for our Iowa country school. ↗
